This April The Wedge & Wheel will host it's first-ever Wine & Cheese Luncheon!

The event will feature three courses of cheese and charcuterie pairings with our very special guest:
Austrian Winemaker Christof Höpler of Weingut Höpler.

We’ll be pouring
Höpler’s beautiful single-vineyard Grüner Veltliner, rich and opulent Blaufränkisch and finishing with their rare dessert wine Trockenbeerenauslese.

To keep our visit with Christof more intimate, we are limiting this event to 16 seats.

About Weingut Höpler:

Weingut Höpler is a family owned, winery located south east of Vienna in Burgenland.  

Their vineyards lie in the Leithaberg Hills on the shores of Lake Neusiedl, making them perfectly suited for a wide range of grapes that produce elegant wines that make versatile food pairings.

Weingut Höpler is famous for making the house wines for the Trapp Family Lodge of Sound of Music fame and are fortunate to count the Vienna State Opera Ball, Jamie Oliver, Thomas Keller (French Laundry, Yountville), Bobby Flay (Mesa Grill, New York), Petri Lukkarinen (Olo, Helsinki), Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White amongst some of their more prestigious customers.

In May The Wedge & Wheel hosts two wine and cheese classes.

Class #1 will bring us back to one of our most popular regions, Northern Italy's Piemonte, specifically Langhe.

We'll begin with Italian Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay and then showcase a fabulous Barbera made by one of the world's leading women winemakers, Chiara Boschis.

Of course, The Langhe means Nebbiolo! The night will wrap with side-by-side comparisons two of the region's best, one most-traditional and one that looks more to the "New World".

Italian Wine & Cheese Class #2: Southern Italy's Campania

Our second Italian wine and cheese class in May heads south and back to Campania when we showcase the wines of the historic Mastroberardino family.

Mastroberardino is one of the leading wineries and wine families in all of Italy in terms of production, market impact, and innovation. This is one single family with a winemaking history which dates back to the early 18th century, and which is largely responsible for the viticultural success of Campania's remote Irpinia area.

The Mastroberardino family have earned themselves a place in Italy’s viticultural history as a guardian and protector of indigenous grapes of Southern Italy’s Campania region. The family has not just worked to maintain these varieties, but Mastroberardino has successfully turned would-be extinct grapes into world class varieties.

This work of transformation began in earnest after WWII when Antonio Mastroberardino returned to his family’s estate to find it in ruins-- the result of economic hardships, phylloxera, neglect and war. Antonio refused to let his family’s legacy fall to circumstance, however, and he worked tirelessly to restore the land he loved.

The Mastroberardino family achieved this restorative transformation by replanting existing vineyards and purchasing the best land they could find to focus on revitalizing Campania’s three ancient varietals of Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico.

Deb Yanker-Black of The Wine Company will share five courses of Syrah from France, Australia, California and Washington while Chris Kohtz from W&W will craft five cheese pairings to highlight the grape’s diversity from region to region.

Our June 7th class will be the first of two looks with two different instructors at a region beloved for both cheeses and wines: The Loire Valley.

The Loire spans several storied regions including Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Bourgueil, Chinon, and Vouvray. Best-loved grapes include Chinon blanc, Sauvignon blanc and Cabernet franc among many others.
