Tipping Not Necessary
I am writing to share an update regarding how The Wedge & Wheel does business and strives to provide an equitable work environment for all its team members.
For the past four years I have been watching closely the local and national discussions regarding “living wages” in the food service industry as well as the concept of “Hospitality Included” wherein restaurants have eliminated tipping and adjusted pay of staff to try to reach a balance between server pay and “back of house” staff. There are many state and federal regulations that determine which positions in a restaurant may, and may not share in gratuities. At W&W customer service is 100% a team effort. When you do business with us, it’s common for you to be served by two or more persons. It’s our team’s collaboration that makes us what we are.
Meanwhile, a greatly tightening labor supply in our region has made finding, developing and maintaining a professional team more challenging for many businesses.
After careful consideration, the Wedge & Wheel will begin eliminating tipping this week. You will no longer be presented with an option to leave a gratuity on your credit card and leaving cash at the table is not necessary.
We already make every effort to pay above average wages in our community. It’s not an easy choice, but it’s the right one. To continue this, we will be adjusting menu pricing in some areas. The total expense of a meal at W&W will differ little, if at all from the total you paid in the past, including average gratuity.
I’ve not come to this decision lightly, and I hope that you will embrace this change as we continue to grow and improve our service to you in the future.
With much appreciation,
Owner, The Wedge & Wheel
